Dallas County Reporting New Highs In Coronavirus Cases And Deaths, Report Says

TOPLINE

Dallas County will report its highest single-day totals for both new coronavirus cases and deaths on Tuesday since the pandemic began, according to a report, with the director of the county’s Department of Health and Human Services saying he’s concerned the spread may accelerate with recent protests seen in the city of Dallas.

KEY FACTS

The county—which includes the city of Dallas in its entirety—will report 257 new coronavirus cases and 16 deaths Tuesday, with The Dallas Morning News reporting that Health and Human Services Director Dr. Philip Huang informed county commissioners of that Tuesday morning.

Those numbers break the old records for Dallas County, which had a single-day high of 253 new cases, reported multiple times, with the previous record high of 14 deaths in one day coming on May 19.

Tuesday is the sixth-straight day Dallas County will have reported at least 200 new cases, seeing a new spike after a period of decline after cases appeared to plateau in mid-May—much later than the early April timeframe when much of the U.S. appeared to hit its peak so far.

At least some of the increases in the case count can be attributed to more testing, with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott saying that’s what led to the state itself seeing daily highs in new cases during May.

But increased testing can’t account for the number of hospitalizations, which Dallas County recently started keeping track of, with Huang telling the county commissioners that there has not been a drop in the 14-day average of hospitalizations.

Huang also said “we’re concerned” about coronavirus spreading from protests in Dallas and crowds recently seen gathering for Memorial Day, with some of those protests—which were against police brutality following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody—turning riotous, leading to looting and destruction.

KEY BACKGROUND

Numbers are reported on the county level, so it’s unclear exactly how many of the cases are from the city of Dallas, but the municipality itself makes up most of the county’s population. Though Texas has moved to Phase 2 of its reopening, allowing bars to resume service and restaurants to reopen dining rooms at 50% capacity, Dallas County is officially advising against going out unless necessary, saying residents should not dine in at restaurants and should limit shopping to once a week, if possible.

BIG NUMBER

10,462 — That’s the total number of coronavirus cases in Dallas County, according to the most recent data from the county’s Department of Health and Human Services, a number which does not yet include Tuesday’s reported record increase.

TANGENT

President Donald Trump has praised the Republican Abbott for his handling of coronavirus and the state’s fast pace of reopening compared to many other large states. Vice President Mike Pence also praised the response from Texas, even floating the state as a potential site for the Republican National Convention after Trump threatened last week to pull the event from North Carolina.
