‘Destroyer Of American Greatness’: Trump Savages Biden As He Accepts GOP Nomination

TOPLINE

After Republicans promised an “optimistic” convention to contrast with the Democrats’ “doom-and-gloom,” President Trump’s acceptance speech for the GOP nomination to run for reelection was dotted with some of his sharpest attacks on Democratic nominee Joe Biden yet.

KEY FACTS

Trump took aim at Biden’s assertion that the 2020 election is a “battle for the soul of our nation,” calling him “not the savior of America’s soul” but the “destroyer of America’s Jobs” and, if elected, “the destroyer of American Greatness.”

Trump also seized on allegations by several women that Biden made them uncomfortable with physical contact, quipping, “For 47 years, Joe Biden took the donations of blue-collar workers, gave them hugs and even kisses.”

Trump also claimed to have done “more in three years for the Black community than Joe Biden has done in 47 years” – a common theme of the RNC in which Black speakers, ignoring Trump’s tough-on-crime stances,  slammed Biden for 1994 crime legislation that imposed tougher federal prison sentences and funded construction of more state prisons.

“Biden’s record is a shameful roll call of the most catastrophic betrayals and blunders in our lifetime,” Trump said, citing Biden’s support of free trade deals and his foreign policy stances.

Trump also repeated a favorite claim of his that “China would own our country” if Biden won, saying he has it “upon very good information” that China “supports Joe Biden and desperately wants him to win,” a reference to a DNI threat update that also said Kremlin-connected actors are “seeking to boost President Trump’s candidacy.”

Repeating a claim often made by his campaign, Trump called Biden a “Trojan horse” for “wild-eyed Marxists like Bernie Sanders and his fellow radicals,” and labeled him “weak.”

Crucial Quote

“This election will decide whether we save the American Dream, or whether we allow a socialist agenda to demolish our cherished destiny,” Trump said in one of the darkest moments of his speech.

Tangent

Trump had several verbal slips in his speech, most notably while accepting the nomination. “With a heart full of gratitude and boundless optimism, I profoundly accept this nomination,” Trump said — a copy of the speech distributed by the campaign revealed he was meant to say “proudly.” The text also showed that the line “we will end our resilience for bad things” was meant to be “we will end our reliance on China once and for all.”

Chief Critic

“In Donald Trump’s America, safety is pitted against justice, Americans are pitted against one another, and the violence that Trump warns of plays out on the streets of communities across our country — stoked by his own words and actions,” the Biden campaign said in a statement. “It has never been more clear than Donald Trump made it tonight: we are in a battle for the soul of our nation.”
