Disney Announces 10 (Yes, 10) Star Wars TV Shows In The Works—Here’s What’s Coming

Star Wars fans who can’t get enough of the franchise may have just gotten the early Christmas present of their dreams, as Disney unveiled a whopping slate of 10 new Star Wars television series coming to Disney+ over the next two years, including some based around characters that are already fan favorites.

Key Facts

The most highly-anticipated may be the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series, which brings back Ewan McGregor in the title role with Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Darth Vader in a show set 10 years after the events of “Revenge of the Sith.”

Also high on the list for fans will be a new series called “Lando,” which follows the popular Lando Calrissian character, and “Ahsoka,” which will star Rosario Dawson, and will be set in the same timeline as “The Mandalorian” series.

Disney also announced that season 3 of “The Mandalorian” will be released on Christmas Day 2021, while another show called “Rangers of the Republic” will also take place in “The Mandalorian” timeline.

“A Droid Story,” featuring R2-D2 and C-3PO is also coming to Disney+, along with a new anime-style Star Wars show called “Star Wars Visions.”

Other shows coming are “Andor,” starring Diego Luna as his character from “Rogue One,” along with a “Clone Wars” spinoff called “The Bad Batch” and a dark side-themed series called “The Acolyte.”

Patty Jenkins will also direct a new Star Wars movie called “Rogue Squadron” that will come to theaters in 2023, while another film directed by Taiki Waititi is in development.

What To Watch For

Disney also announced more new content at its Investor Day on Thursday, including a new “Indiana Jones” movie set to be released in July 2022. Harrison Ford will return to play the title role, Disney confirmed.

Disney has made Star Wars one of its marquee brands since acquiring Lucasfilm from founder George Lucas for more than $4 billion in 2012. It notably released three more feature films following the main storyline over the past six years, with each of those films being among the highest-grossing movies of all-time, while also releasing two spin-off films. Its “The Mandalorian” TV series has also been a hit among fans, while receiving critical acclaim. Disney has also opened a Star Wars-themed land called “Galaxy’s Edge” at both Disneyland in California and in its Hollywood Studios theme park at Disney World in Florida.

Many longtime fans have been unhappy about the direction Disney has taken the Star Wars brand, particularly when it came to the three films Disney released that followed the main Skywalker storyline. Some fans have gone as far as to petition Disney to remove the three films from canon, or even call for the films to be remade.
