Dixie Chicks Change Band Name To The Chicks

Dixie Chicks has changed its name to The Chicks. On Thursday morning (June 25), the country trio’s social media pages and website displayed the new name.

The drop of “Dixie” from the band’s name is likely in response to the current climate of racial injustice in America. Earlier this month, fellow country trio Lady Antebellum changed its name to Lady A as “Antebellum” is a reference to slavery in pre-Civil War America.

A representative for The Chicks couldn’t be reached for comment immediately.

As the band reportedly changed its name to The Chicks, it also dropped a politically charged song called “March March.” The music video for the empowering anthem of speaking out for one’s beliefs includes footage from past marches across the United States in protest of school shootings, climate change, abortion legislation, gun control, the Iraq War and more recently Black Lives Matter.

“March, march to my own drum/ March, march to my own drum/ Hey, hey, I’m an army of one/ Oooh, I’m an army of one,” the band sings.

The video closes with the message, “Use your Voice. Use your Vote.” Signed by The Chicks’ Martie Maguire, Natalie Maines and Emily Strayer, it includes links to Black Lives Matter and various voting campaigns and organizations that contribute to racial equality.

The song comes ahead of the July 17 release of Gaslighter, The Chicks’ first studio album in 14 years.
