Doc Rivers Hired To Coach The 76ers

Doc Rivers has agreed to terms on a five-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers to become their new head coach, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

After being let go by the Clippers on Monday, the Sixers reached out to Rivers, who was seen landing in Philadelphia on Wednesday and then getting in a car. It was reported he watched Game 1 of the NBA Finals with the Sixers’ brass later that night.

Rivers takes over a 76ers’ team features Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons but under-performed and was swept out of the playoffs by the Celtics, leading to the firing of Brett Brown on Aug. 24.

Rivers, 58, is 943-681 (.581) in his career with Orlando, Boston and the Clippers.

He led the Clippers to the conference semifinals three times, but never got them to the West Finals. This year’s team featured Kawhi Leonard and Paul George and was expected to challenge the Lakers in the West Finals, but blew a 3-1 to the Nuggets in the West semis.

Clippers assistant Ty Lue and ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy are the favorites to replace Rivers in L.A.
