Drake, The Weeknd, Future And Dua Lipa: Roddy Ricch’s ‘The Box’ Has Blocked Them All From Hitting No. 1

Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” came out of almost nowhere earlier this year and catapulted straight to the top of the Hot 100, and ever since it has controlled the chart with an iron grip. Several hit singles pushed by some of the biggest names in the world have attempted to dethrone the streaming giant, but none have been able to…at least not yet.

Here are the songs that “The Box” has kept from making it to the top spot on the Hot 100 during its double-digit week-long tenure at No. 1.

Future – “Life Is Good (ft. Drake)”

In what will go down as one of the most unfortunate release timings of all time, Future and Drake happened to drop their latest collaborative single “Life Is Good” just as “The Box” was climbing to No. 1 on the Hot 100. The two rappers started their new smash in the runner-up rung on the tally, and had Ricch’s tune ascended just one week later, they would likely have claimed one of a very rare number of No. 1 debuts.

“Life Is Good” ended up waiting patiently in second place for two months, never accruing enough sales, streams or spins on radio stations to best the biggest track in the country, though it did make history by never ruling.

Dua Lipa – “Don’t Start Now”

The pop star’s second-ever top 10 hit “Don’t Start Now” quickly became a true blockbuster all around the world, including in the United States, where Dua Lipa is still introducing herself to millions. The first single from her upcoming sophomore album Future Nostalgia gave her a new highest placement on the Hot 100, eventually lifting all the way to No. 2. It only sat there for one frame before it was replaced by the next item on this list.

The Weeknd – “Blinding Lights”

Before his new album After Hours officially impacts the U.S. charts, the second single from the project jumped to No. 2, and it may very well be the song that finally ends Ricch’s reign atop the Hot 100. “Blinding Lights” has been selected by fans as the favorite track from the set, at least before all the songs were available, and it has hit No. 1 in a number of countries.

Based on how well the Canadian R&B powerhouse’s new material is performing when it comes to sales and streams, the tune may ascend when the chart refreshes once again.
