While the Erickson Lubin vs. Terrell Gausha fight isn’t necessarily a premier junior middleweight matchup, that doesn’t mean Saturday night’s bout isn’t important. I think Lubin is the seventh-best fighter at 154 pounds—Gausha checks in at No. 10—and the winner will become the mandatory opponent for the victor of next week’s Jermell Charlo vs. Jeison Rosario unification title match.

Don’t tell Lubin this fight isn’t a big deal.

“These are great fights to get me ready for another title shot,” Lubin said this week. “Fighting for a title at such a young age did a lot for my game. It helped me get to that next level. This next go-around for the title will definitely be different. I feel like I’m at my best right now. 

“I’m fighting for that mandatory spot for the winner of Jermell Charlo vs. Jeison Rosario and I’m looking forward to getting in the ring to fight one of those guys. I’m excited to fight for not just one strap, but all three. I’m not just chasing Jermell Charlo. I’m chasing those titles. If he wins, so be it. I want those belts.”

First, though, he’ll have to get past Gausha, and that probably won’t be an easy task.

Lubin is a healthy favorite at -700 (win $100 on a $700 bet), while Gausha sits at +400 (earn $400 on a $100 wager). But that Lubin money line is probably not something you want to bet. Instead, you could go with the prop bet of -167 for Lubin to win by decision (he’s +240 to win by KO/TKO). Gausha, meanwhile, is +700 for a KO/TKO and +900 for a decision victory. Gausha probably doesn’t have the power to stop Lubin, so if you love the idea of picking an upset here, wagering on the Gausha decision could be a fruitful move.

At this point in his career, it’s hard to forget Lubin’s first-round destruction at the hands of Jermell Charlo in 2017. The knockout loss was nasty, and though Lubin has won four-straight fights since then, that bout has overshadowed everything else Lubin has accomplished in his career so far. Coming into Saturday night, Lubin is 22-1 with 16 KOs.

Gausha (21-1-1, 10 KOs) is a solid fighter, but he doesn’t have any standout victories. In his two most important fights, Gausha had a draw vs. Austin Trout and a loss to Erislandy Lara in 2017. Gausha hasn’t proven he can beat anybody at Lubin’s level, and I have my doubts whether he will on Saturday.

Lubin is only 24 years old, and despite his loss to Charlo, he could eventually become one of the stars of the 154-pound division. He has talent, and he has a couple of solid victories against Ishe Smith and Nathaniel Gallimore. A knockout victory vs. Gausha would be an impressive outcome for Lubin. But what’s more likely in my mind is a unanimous decision win for Lubin, somewhere in the 117-111 range.
