FC Barcelona’s Nelson Semedo Is Wanted By Five European Giants – Who Are They?

Nelson Semedo proved himself to be one of FC Barcelona’s best and most versatile performers in early 2020/2021.

Filling in for Jordi Alba on the opposite flank of the Blaugrana’s backline, where new recruit Junior Firpo failed miserably, the right back helped his team rise back to the top of La Liga and secure safe passage to the Champions League knockout stages with his future at the Camp Nou appearing bright.

But then injury struck in a domestic clash against Celta Vigo, and, after making an unimpressive return in El Clasico to close the year, his replacement in the first XI by Sergi Roberto meant that the Portuguese international had become surplus to requirements.

At the turn of the decade, sporting director negotiated Semedo’s shock sale with his agent Jorge Mendes in Dubai to see if all parties were open to a move out of the Catalan club. Finding that they were, the 26-year-old has since had his name linked to a string of top European clubs with Mundo Deportivo reporting on Friday morning that no less than five are interested in acquiring his services.

Here they are, discussed in further detail.

Juventus

On Sunday, it was reported by MD’s rival publication SPORT that the Old Lady and Barca had brokered a deal involving Miralem Pjanic and Mattia De Sciglio heading to Spain for Semedo and around $27mn.

With former Real Madrid star Danilo failing to flatter in their shared role, Semedo would provide a strong reinforcement for the Serie A rulers.

Inter Milan

It is in one of the numerous deals involving Lautaro Martinez that Semedo winds up at the San Siro. At 33, Antonio Candreva is no spring chicken in that area of the pitch, and Semedo still has his best years ahead of him.

PSG

Thomas Meunier’s contract winding down, the Parisians could make a swoop for Semedo even if he is not included in a part exchange for Neymar looking more unlikely each passing week.

Manchester City

In an all Portuguese affair, former Barca manager Pep Guardiola would apparently be relieved to have Joao Cancelo, who was meant to fill in for Danilo, taken off his hands. The two vie for minutes for the national team, and fans often bicker over who is the better player for the reigning European champions.

Bayern Munich

Joshua Kimmich having long moved into defensive midfield, World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard is also tipped to permanently convert into a center back in the near future freeing up a vacancy in Semedo’s preferred role.
