Finance ministry remembers Arun Jaitley, describes him as key player in GST implementation – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The finance ministry on Monday paid rich tributes to Arun Jaitley on his first death anniversary for playing a key role in GST (goods and services tax) key and mentioned that the new indirect tax regime will go down in history as one of the most fundamental landmark reforms in Indian taxation.
“As we remember Shri Arun Jaitley today, let us acknowledge the key role he played in the implementation of GST, which will go down in history as one of the most fundamental landmark reforms in Indian taxation,” the ministry stated in a series of tweets.

GST subsumed over a dozen state levies in transforming the country into ‘one nation, one tax’ path.
Jaitley served as finance minister in the first Narendra Modi-led government and wore many hats in public life, from that of a lawyer to a politician and a cricket administrator. He died at the age of 66 last year after battling prolonged illness.
Top BJP politicians also remembered Jaitley, who was the voice of the party on various issues for decades and was seen as its main trouble-shooter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “On this day, last year, we lost Shri Arun Jaitley Ji. I miss my friend a lot. Arun Ji diligently served India. His wit, intellect, legal acumen and warm personality were legendary. Here is what I had said during a prayer meeting in his memory.”

Remembering Jaitley, Union home minister Amit Shah said that he was an outstanding politician, prolific orator and a great human being who had “no parallels” in Indian polity.
