G2 Esports Win The LEC Summer Split ‘League Of Legends’ Tournament

G2 Esports pulled off one of the most impressive wins in LEC history by taking down Fnatic 3-0 in the grand final to win the LEC Summer Split and to win their fourth LEC title in a row.

The final was the ultimate matchup in European League of Legends, featuring the two organizations with the most split wins in history. The winner would take sole ownership of the title of the winningest team in EU League of Legends history, so a lot was on the line alongside the €80,000 first-place prize and the top seed for Europe at Worlds.

But throughout the season it looked like this would not be the final we got to see, despite these two teams dominating almost every other split in LEC history. Both G2 and Fnatic struggled in the regular season, with Fnatic only making it into the playoffs in the final round of games in the regular season.

After just squeezing into the upper bracket for playoffs, both G2 and Fnatic took down the two teams who dominated the regular season, Mad Lions and Rogue, to set up a matchup between the two in the upper bracket final. Fnatic won that 3-2, forcing G2 to the lower bracket, where G2 just managed to beat Rogue 3-2 to secure a rematch in the final.

The final was one of the craziest series we have seen in competitive League of Legends for some time. Game one was an epic affair, running almost 50 minutes and featuring a massive 53 kills. The action was incredible, but it was G2 who managed to pull out the win to go one up in the grand final.

Then game two was just as crazy. Fnatic built up a massive lead and even managed to take down two inhibitors before backing off to play a safer tactic instead of forcing the end of the game. And from there G2 just came out swinging, they took fight after fight after fight, secured the key objectives on the map and ran at Fnatic’s base to secure the win. Some last-minute base race shenanigans from Fnatic were not enough to stop the Nexus from falling, and they went down 2-0 in heartbreaking fashion.

Any team would have struggled to come back from a loss like that, especially after losing such an epic first game as well. So it was no surprise when G2 started to pull ahead in the mid-game in game three. By the 25 minute mark, they had a commanding lead and it was only a matter of time before they closed out the game to secure the series win and become LEC Summer Split champions.

G2 are now the most successful team in European League of Legends history and will head into the World Championship as the number one seed from Europe. After reaching the final last year they will be looking to go one better and bring the Worlds trophy back to Europe.
