G2, Team Secret And ‘League Of Legends’ Win Big At The Esports Awards

The annual Esports Awards concluded earlier tonight, with the best the industry has to offer being celebrated in the virtual event. There were many well-deserving winners, but it was G2 Esports, Team Secret and League of Legends that picked up the biggest honours. 

The biggest winner on the night was Riot Games and League of Legends, with four awards going to the esports activations from the company. Riot itself took home the Esports Publisher of the Year award and League of Legends took the Esports Game of the Year award. The League of Legends European Championship content team won the Esports Content Team of the Year award and the LoL season opening was named as the Esports Creative Piece of the Year. 

The other big multi-award winner was the Team Secret organisation, and specifically, the organization’s flagship Dota 2 team that has dominated the pro scene over the past year. Michał “Nisha” Jankowski was named the PC Player of the Year, Lee “Heen” Seung Gon was named as Coach of the Year and the entire Dota 2 roster was named as Team of the Year. Not bad considering the Dota 2 scene has effectively been on hold since the pandemic hit earlier in the year. 

The other big winner was the G2 Esports organization. While it may not have picked up as many awards as the other two big winners, the two the organization did take home were big hitters. G2 was named as Organization of the Year, one of the most prestigious and hotly contended awards at the show, while G2 founder and CEO Carlos “ocelote” Rodríguez Santiago took home the Esports Personality of the Year award. 

Elsewhere at the show WWE superstar, Xavier Woods was on hand to present an award, and also received the award for Esports Content Creator of the Year thanks to his UpUpDownDown YouTube channel. 

“It has been a milestone year, not just for the Esports Awards, but for the esports industry,” said Michael Ashford, Managing Director, Esports Awards. “We have been faced with many challenges and hurdles as well as opportunities to showcase how resilient and talented our industry is. As we conclude our fifth year with more votes, more viewership, and more mainstream partners than ever before I am pleased that we were able to put together an ambitious virtual event to celebrate those who have really made a difference and continued to push our industry forward.”
