GA Gov. Kemp Denounces Attacks From Former Trump Attorney As ‘Absolutely Absurd’

Topline

Gov. Brian Kemp Tuesday denounced unsubstantiated accusations made recently by Sidney Powell, an attorney that had been a part of President Donald Trump’s legal team, who suggested an election systems company had bribed Kemp as a part of a vast voter fraud conspiracy to prevent Trump from being re-elected.

Key Facts

On Saturday, during an interview on the ultraconservative network Newsmax, Powell claimed, without evidence, that Gov. Kemp and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (both Republicans) accepted payoffs as part of a global conspiracy that involved former Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez and the rigging of Dominion Voting Systems.

“Georgia’s probably going to be the first state I’m gonna blow up,” Powell said Saturday, pronouncing that election lawsuit would be “biblical.”

Powell declared that Kemp and Raffensperger “need to go,” because they were “in on the Dominion scam.”

On Tuesday afternoon, at a press conference addressing the rising Covid-19 crises in Georgia, the governor pushed back against what he called “baseless attacks” and “misinformation.”

“These are ridiculous,” Kemp said. “They only seek to breed fear, create confusion and sow discord amongst our citizens. Now, more than ever, we must stand up for the truth, and we need to unite around our shared values.”

Key Background:

In mid-November, Trump tweeted that Powell was part of a “truly great team” spearheaded by Rudy Giuliani that was endeavoring “to defend OUR RIGHT to FREE and FAIR ELECTIONS!” On Thursday, Powell appeared alongside Giuliani at a press conference. On Sunday, less than 24 hours after her appearance on Newsmax, the Trump campaign disavowed Powell. “Sidney Powell is practicing law on her own,” the campaign said in a statement. “She is not a member of the Trump legal team. She is also not a lawyer for the president in his personal capacity.”

Critical Quote:

“Sidney Powell accusing Governor Brian Kemp of a crime on television yet being unwilling to go on TV and defend and lay out the evidence that she supposedly has, this is outrageous conduct,” former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Sunday morning.

Tangent:

According to a Wall Street Journal report Tuesday, Trump was “particularly irked” by criticism of Powell by Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Last week, Carlson claimed that he had asked Powell for evidence to support her assertions, but she failed to provide any proof.
