Giants Cornerback DeAndre Baker Involved In An Alleged Armed Robbery Incident

Giants second-year cornerback DeAndre Baker has been accused of committing armed robbery and aggravated assault with a firearm during a small social gathering gone astray in Miramar, Florida, on May 13.

TMZ Sports was first to report the story.

According to an affidavit released by the Miramar Police Department, Baker, Seattle cornerback Quinton Dunbar, and third unidentified man were alleged to have threatened attendees at the gathering, with Baker reportedly brandishing a semiautomatic firearm.

The affidavit further goes on to claim that Baker allegedly directed Dunbar to take cash and watches from the victims by force. Baker and Dunbar were said to have allegedly stole $12,400 and four watches worth an estimated $61,100 from multiple victims.

One of he victims told police that he had met Baker and Dunbar at a party at another social gathering a couple of days before the incident, a meeting in which the two cornerbacks allegedly lost about $70,000.

Also according to the affidavit, the 22-year-old Baker is alleged to have directed an unnamed man wearing a red face mask to shoot an unidentified party as that person entered the room.

No one was believed to have been physically harmed during the incident.

The Miramar Police Department confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued for Baker. In addition to the legal percussions, the incident is expected to be reviewed under the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy.

Any action taken by the league against Baker, per the terms of the new CBA agreed to by the players union and the NFL earlier this year, will be determined by a neutral party appointed by the league and the NFLPA.

Baker’s future with the Giants is also in jeopardy, pending the legal outcome of his case. If he is found guilty on any of the charges, it would almost certainly spell the end of his career with the team.

Baker was the 30th overall pick in the 2019 draft, a player the Giants traded up to acquire. AS the first cornerback off the board, he would go on to sign a four-year, $10.525 million contract with a $5.6 million signing bonus.

But Baker’s transition to life in the NFL got off to a rocky start thanks in part ot a knee injury suffered during training camp that cost him a large chunk of the summer.

When he returned to the lineup, Baker initially struggled to grasp the Giants playbook, but would eventually hunker down and commit more to studying and learning his craft. He finished his rookie campaign with 61 total tackles in 15 starts.

Baker was set to compete with fellow youngsters Sam Beal, Julian Love, and Corey Ballentine for one of the starting cornerback jobs opposite free-agent acquisition James Bradberry.

The Giants, in a statement released by a spokesperson, said, “We are aware of the situation. We have been in contact with DeAndre. We have no further comment at this time.”

“We are aware of the matter but will decline further comment at this time,” a NFL spokesperson said when reached for comment.
