GOP Candidate Refuses To Drop Out After Party Leaders Condemn Report Of Racist Videos

TOPLINE

Republican House candidate Marjorie Taylor Greene, who drew headlines for her belief in the Qanon conspiracy theory, is refusing to drop out of the race after coming under fire from GOP House leaders for racist videos of her uncovered by Politico.

KEY FACTS

Greene, a businesswoman, finished first in the GOP primary in Georgia’s 14th District by 19 points but failed to win 50% of the vote, leading to a runoff between her and neurosurgeon John Cowan scheduled for August.

Greene’s first-place finish drew startled national headlines due to her close associations with the Qanon movement, which believes there’s a deep state conspiracy to undermine President Trump.

But Greene is only now facing heat from her party’s leaders, not for Qanon, but for hours of Facebook videos, uncovered by Politico, in which she asserts Muslims should not serve in government, calls Jewish Democratic megadonor George Soros a Nazi and compares Black Lives Matter activists to the KKK.

“There is an Islamic invasion into our government offices right now,” Greene said in one of the videos, while in another she claimed black Americans are “held slaves to the Democratic Party.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) both denounced the comments, as did a spokesperson for NRCC Chair, Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), who told Politico Emmer is “personally disgusted by this rhetoric and condemns it in the strongest possible terms.”

Rep. Rick Allen (R-Ga.) told Forbes that the comments are “shameful” and that “there is no place for them in our society,” but did not say if he’s supporting a candidate, while a spokesperson for Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) said an endorsement of Cowan was forthcoming.

But Greene pushed back on the condemnations on Wednesday, tweeting, “The Fake News Media, the DC Swamp, and their radical leftist allies see me as a very serious threat. I will not let them whip me into submission.”

Key Background

Greene, who was initially challenging Rep. Lucy McBath but switched to the 14th District when Rep. Tom Graves announced his retirement, isn’t the first candidate Republican leaders have had to denounce this cycle. McCarthy unendorsed Ted Howze, a GOP candidate in California’s 10th District, a swing district, after derogatory comments he made on social media surfaced. Rep. Steve King, who lost his primary in June, also lost support from Republican leaders and had his committee assignments stripped after questioning why terms like “white nationalism” are offensive last January.

Big Number

3%. An internal poll from Cowan’s campaign conducted just before the videos surfaced, reported by National Journal’s Kirk Bado, found Greene leading Cowan by just 3 points, 43% to 40%.

Chief Critic

“The comments made by Ms. Greene are disgusting and don’t reflect the values of equality and decency that make our country great,” said Scalise, who added he will be “supporting Dr. Cowan.”

News Peg

Due to the district’s heavy Republican lean, the winner of the runoff is all but certain to become a member of Congress. While Republican leaders’ denunciations of Greene could cost her support, her strong showing in the jungle primary, despite her Qanon beliefs and calling a Parkland shooting survivor “little Hitler,” suggests she could still have a shot at becoming a member of Congress.
