Government’s fresh push to boost rankings in global indices – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The government is giving a fresh push to improve India’s ranking in various global indices to reflect the changes taking place in the country. As part of the efforts, being spearheaded by the Cabinet secretary, various ministries have been asked to ensure swift and updated data to help improve rankings. Government think tank NITI Aayog will be the nodal agency to oversee the revamp.
For now, the government has identified 29 global indices as its focus and ministries have been asked to work on particular indices and ensure that data on them are updated.
“During the review, we found out that in some cases the data was almost 10 years old and in some cases there was no data. So now, it will be the responsibility of the particular ministries to ensure that they undertake a fresh review and update the numbers,” said a senior government official. He said the review also showed that in several indices, the country’s ranking was low or had remained stagnant despite changes taking place. “We need a better reflection of the ground realities,” the official said.
The latest push to ensure better rankings across global indices comes against the government’s efforts to attract investors across sectors and showcase the changes taking place on the ground.
To begin with, the home ministry has been entrusted to work on five indices, which include the safe cities index, global terrorism index, global climate risk index, global peace index, travel and tourism competitiveness index. The department of promotion of industry and internal trade will work on updating the data linked to Global Competitiveness Index and Ease of Doing Business Index of the World Bank.
