KEY FACTS
Some 43% of black women polled, as well as 47% of moderate and conservative Democrats and 40% of liberal Democrats said they were more likely to vote for Biden with Harris on the ticket, according to the Axios-SurveyMoney poll.
It found Harris has the highest net favorable rating of the four presidential and vice presidential candidates: 36% favorable compared to 34% unfavorable.
A poll by ABC News/Ipsos released earlier on Thursday showed that 37% of registered voters viewed Harris favorably compared to 32% who said they have an unfavorable view of her.
White men, whites who haven’t graduated from college and voters aged 65 and above were the least impressed with Biden’s choice of her as running mate, the survey finds.
Besides being the first Black woman on a major party’s presidential ticket, she’s also the first Indian American.
The online poll was conducted Aug. 11-12 among 2,847 U.S. adults.
crucial quote
“The initial, modestly positive take on Harris is sure to encourage Democrats. A solid start for a party that needs tight unity to win back the White House.” said Jon Cohen, Chief Executive at SurveyMonkey.
key background
The Trump campaign wasted no time suggesting the first Black woman on a major party ticket is ineligible to serve. After President Donald Trump’s sexist depictions of her as “mean” and “nasty,” his campaign retweeted an op-ed written by law professor John Eastman which questioned whether Harris was legally eligible to serve as vice president due to the immigration status of her parents at the time of her birth.
