Topline: An enormous explosion on Beirut’s port has left more than 100 dead, thousands injured and reportedly damaged half of the city that could cost up to $15 billion. Once called “The Paris of the Middle East,” this is how Beirut looks after the explosion went off Tuesday.
- Two explosions near the Port of Beirut rocked Lebanon’s capital city Tuesday, resulting in mass damages and casualties city-wide, even miles away from the blasts.
- Authorities believe the explosion was caused by a fire that broke out near a warehouse containing confiscated, highly-explosive materials by Beirut’s port.
- Lebanon was already struggling with an economic downturn and the coronavirus pandemic, and experts say the damage and displacement caused by the blast will only exacerbate the situation—not to mention that Lebanon relies heavily on imported goods, and the explosion has leveled the country’s main port.
