How Popular Is Kamala Harris With Democrats? [Infographic]

Yesterday, U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden announced he has picked California Senator Kamala Harris to be his running mate. On Twitter, Biden described her as “a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants”. Harris is of Indian-Jamaican heritage and she becomes the third woman nominated as a vice-presidential candidate after Sarah Palin in 2008 and Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, neither of whom were on the winning ballot. Long considered one of the favorites to be Biden’s running mate, Harris has been a consistent and vocal critic of President Trump, lambasting him for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his stance on immigration. So just how popular is Harris among Democrats?

Polling data from The Economist/YouGov shows that registered Democratic voters have had a consistently favorable opinion of the California Senator. Even before yesterday’s announcement, she remained the top choice for the vice-presidential ticket among those who planned to vote for Joe Biden with 22% of his supporters believing she should be nominated. The research also found that the majority of Biden supporters, 51%, think Harris will be an asset to his campaign with only 12% believing she will hurt his chances of becoming president.
