The third — and likely final — bout between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier takes place tonight. The heavyweight matchup headlines the UFC 252 pay-per-view card from UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
When Miocic and Cormier first faced off in July 2018, Miocic had set a UFC record with three consecutive heavyweight title defenses. At the time, Cormier was the UFC light heavyweight kingpin. Cormier became a dual champ when he knocked out Miocic at the 4:33 mark of the the first round of that contest, which headlined UFC 226.
The second matchup between Miocic and Cormier took place more than a year later. The two faced off in the main event of UFC 241. Cormier looked to be in control of the fight through the first three rounds. Miocic changed his game plan for the fourth round and began landing powerful strikes to the body. Those punches hurt Cormier and seemed to sap whatever strength and cardio he had. With 51 seconds left in the fourth, Miocic finished the fight via strikes.
It’s been nearly a year since that matchup. The two meet for the third — and likely final — time on Saturday, August 15. Cormier has said the trilogy bout will mark the end of his MMA career.
