An important matchup in the light heavyweight division takes place tonight at UFC Apex. In the main event of UFC on ESPN+ 33, former 205-pound title challenger Anthony Smith faces the up-and-coming Aleksandar Rakic. 

The reason the fight is important is that Jon Jones recently relinquished the UFC light heavyweight crown. Jones plans to speak to the UFC about moving up to the heavyweight division. Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz face off at UFC 253 to decide who will be the next UFC 205-pound champion. 

The winner of the matchup between Smith, who is the No. 5 ranked fighter in the official UFC light heavyweight rankings, and Rakic, who is ranked at No. 10, could be the next title challenger.

Smith is 1-2 in his past three outings. Rakic saw his 12-fight winning streak come to an end in his last outing. He dropped a split decision to Volkan Oezdemir in that bout.

In the co-main event of tonight’s UFC card, former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler faces Neil Magny. Lawler is ranked No. 13 in the 170-pound division while Many checks in at No. 14. Lawler is 1-4 since 2016 and is on the first three-fight losing skid of his career. Magny is 4-1 in his last five outings. He is riding a two-fight winning streak.
