I Don’t Buy The WandaVision ‘More Mutants’ Reverse ‘House Of M’ Theory

The longer WandaVision goes, the more I’m hearing about a particular theory, one that plays off a turn in the comic that partially inspired the show, House of M. Spoilers follow.

House of M takes place after Wanda creates a fake reality to bring her lost children back, and this week especially, we sort of saw direct parallels between the show and that story, especially at the end with undead Vision creeping up on us all.

House of M culminates in an iconic moment where Wanda uses her reality-warping powers to simply declare “No More Mutants,” and in an instant, the mutant population of the world is reduced from millions to mere hundreds, a change which had long-lasting effects in the Marvel universe at the time.

The theory goes that WandaVision may be setting up for essentially a reverse of this, a “More Mutants” moments. How we get there is somewhat nebulous, but some combination of Wanda using her own powers and maybe the lingering power of the Mind Stone to not erase mutants, but create mutants, or unlock the mutant gene that’s already there.

Wanda and her brother Pietro are technically mutants in the comic as children of Magneto, but the MCU never established them as such because at the time, they didn’t have rights to the X-Men.

But now they do after getting them back from FOX, which creates a problem of how to get them into this universe. Enter: Wanda and Reverse House of M.

I’m sorry but I just don’t buy this theory.

The timing just doesn’t work for the plans we know about regarding the coming phase of the Marvel universe.

Phase 4 appears to be about two things, mainly: The arrival of the multiverse, as evidenced by Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and the new three Spider-men Spider-Man movie. And then also the assembling of a new, younger Avengers, as evidenced by…I mean practically everything. Hawkeye training Kate Bishop, Peter Parker picking up Tony’s mantle. Yelena as the potential new Black Widow. Shuri as the potential new Black Panther. A Ms. Marvel show. Hell, even Wanda and Vision’s newborn children, who will go on to become young Avengers, Wiccan and Speed.

What does not seem to be in the cards is anything regarding the X-Men, who by all accounts are being saved for Phase 5, probably 3-5 years from now, as you know Disney is never going to stop this train now.

So why would WandaVision, effectively one of the first major installments of Phase 4 (I think Spider-Man: Homecoming was technically the first?) be something to set up the arrival of mutants when we already have non-mutant content mapped out for the next few years? I don’t get it.

What makes far, far more sense is a counter prediction, that Wanda may have something to do with ripping open reality and accessing/creating the aforementioned multiverse. We already heard that WandaVision would lead into Doctor Strange 2 in some way, so that makes perfect sense, as does the idea that her massive, reality-bending powers may have something to do with the arrival of the multiverse.

This could obviously have direct effects for her, too. An alternate universe could bring Vision back to life and make her children with him real. But what I do not think this adds up to is anything resembling the arrival of mutants in the MCU, no matter what the source material is based on.
