‘I Don’t Think We’re Going To Be Lucky With This One’: Hurricane Zeta Takes Aim At Louisiana

Topline

Hurricane Zeta is barreling towards the Gulf Coast and is expected to make landfall just south of New Orleans Wednesday afternoon, bringing life-threatening storm surges and fierce winds to the northern Gulf Coast.

Key Facts

Early Wednesday, Hurricane Zeta’s maximum sustained winds were close to 90 mph, with gusts that could reach even higher, and the National Hurricane Center expects Zeta could get stronger as it approaches land.

Zeta was 295 miles south-southwest of New Orleans, moving at about 17 mph as of 7 a.m.

Hurricane warnings have been announced from Morgan City, Alabama, across the Mississippi coast line up until Alabama, and a tropical storm warning was announced along the Florida panhandle.

The storm surge is likely to be between two and nine feet, depending on the area, which is already expecting up to four inches of rain, the hurricane center said.

Tornados are also expected in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, southern Alabama and the Florida panhandle.

A turbine that powers New Orleans’ antiquated drainage system broke down Sunday with little chance of repair, leaving the city vulnerable to heavy flooding should any other turbines fail, officials said at a press conference Tuesday, according to CBS.

Crucial Quote

“I don’t think we’re going to be as lucky with this one,” city emergency director Colin Arnold told CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV.

Big Number
