Inter Milan On Lockdown Following Daniele Rugani Coronavirus Announcement

Inter Milan will now go into isolation following the announcement that Juventus defender Daniele Rugani has tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Antonio Conte’s side released a statement earlier confirming that club activities such as training has all been suspended following the news and that they will carry out necessary precautions and procedures.

“Following Juventus FC’s announcement that their player Daniele Rugani has tested positive for COVID-19, FC Internazionale announce that all competitive activities have been suspended until further notice.

“The Club is currently taking steps to put all the necessary procedures into place.”

“The footballer, Daniele Rugani has tested positive for Coronavirus-COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic,” read a statement.

“Juventus Football Club is currently activating all the isolation procedures required by law, including those who have had contact with him.”

Juventus defeated Inter 2-0 on Sunday at the Allianz Stadium with goals from Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala. Rugani, the player who has tested positive, did not feature in the match but was present on the substitutes bench and therefore was in the same environment as the rest of his teammates, Maurizio Sarri and the Nerazzurri.

Conte’s side were expected to face Getafe in the Europa League on Thursday, but the game was postponed by UEFA after the Spanish side refused to travel to Milan due to the outbreak.

It now remains to be seen if Euro 2020 will go ahead as planned this summer following Rugani’s diagnosis. Former Inter general manager Ernesto Paolillo claimed he was worried “UEFA will only make a decision to postpone Euro 2020 when there’s the first Coronavirus case in an important team.”

“I think the moment has come when everyone has to make the necessary decisions,” ex-Inter chief Paolillo told TMW Radio.

“It’s unthinkable that we could continue like this, with one team playing and one that isn’t. We’re creating chaos. The wisest decision and one to get across the gravity of the situation would be to block all sport. If people keep carrying on as if nothing is happening, they will underestimate the dangers of everyday life.

“Nothing that bad would happen if we postponed Euro 2020. It’s a big decision, but it has to be done. I realise there are many interests involved, that it would be costly to certain investments, but the risk right now is that UEFA will only make a decision when there’s the first Coronavirus case in an important team. We should ask ourselves, do we really want to wait until that moment?

“The sporting solution would be to find a way to continue the season later and postponing Euro 2020 to next year would be a positive contribution to that,” added Paolillo.

“Any other option would end up causing more trouble. If we have to wait for the Lega Serie A and 20 clubs to work out which is the best way to assign the Scudetto, we’ll never get out of it.”

The fact so many matches across Europe have been cancelled including Serie A games suggests there may not be time to play rescheduled fixtures before the tournament gets underway in June, but so far everything is going ahead as planned.
