‘It’s Looney Tunes’: Georgia Election Official Slams Pro-Trump Lawyers Encouraging Republicans To Boycott Runoff

Topline

One day after two pro-Trump attorneys urged Georgians not to vote in the upcoming January Senate runoff elections unless election officials resolve baseless allegations of voter fraud in the state, Gabriel Sterling, Georgia’s Republican voting systems implementation manager, sought to point out the absurdity of the argument, calling the idea “looney tunes.”

Key Facts

Asked by CNN why the attorneys would propose such an idea during an interview Thursday, Sterling, who was thrust into the spotlight after he attacked President Trump for stoking violent threats over his baseless voter fraud claims this week, replied, “Who the heck knows?” before saying he was “speechless.”

During a press conference Wednesday, L. Lin Wood, an lawyer who has filed cases on Trump’s behalf, and Sidney Powell, a former Trump legal team attorney, encouraged Georgians to boycott the January 5 Senate runoff elections—which could decide control of the upper chamber—unless voting officials look into their unsubstantiated voter fraud claims.

The wild proposal elicited scorn from Republicans and even the Trump campaign, whose Twitter account attacked Wood Wednesday night, posting an article that accused Wood of having Democratic ties.

Wood, during the press conference, also attacked Sterling directly, telling him to “Listen up…you’re not going to sell our votes to China!” in an apparent reference to an unhinged conspiracy theory floated first by Powell.

Sterling laughed off Powell’s wild claims, saying they had “no basis in any reality whatsoever,” before criticizing the president for echoing similar claims during his rambling, 46-minute-long, video on the “rigged” election he posted Wednesday.

“This all comes out of fever dreams,” Sterling added.

What To Watch For

Georgia is finalize its second recount by Friday. On Wednesday, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said authorities have found no evidence of fraud and predicted President-elect Joe Biden’s win would stand.

Sterling delivered an impassioned plea for Trump to end his attacks on the election process in remarks that went viral Tuesday. “It all has gone too far,” a visibly emotional Sterling said.

Chief Critic

Trump on Wednesday responded directly to Sterling’s comments: “Rigged election,” the president said. “Show signatures and envelopes. Expose the massive voter fraud in Georgia. What is Secretary of State and @BrianKempGA afraid of. They know what we’ll find!!!”
