Jacksonville Jaguars Latest To Close Facility After Covid-19 Scare

Topline

In the latest instance of the coronavirus pandemic impacting the National Football League, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced Saturday morning they closed their facilities after a practice squad player tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday, but said in a statement they are still planning to play Sunday’s scheduled game against  Detroit.

Key Facts

After the Jaguars confirmed the positive test late Friday evening, the organization said they began working with the NFL to review contact tracing data while the player self-isolated.

As a precautionary measure, the team will conduct its football activities remotely while following NFL protocols and recommendations.

In New England, the Patriots reopened their facilities on Saturday morning after the team was forced to cancel its Friday practice following starting center James Ferentz testing positive for the coronavirus.

The Patriots are scheduled to host the Denver Broncos on Sunday and are continuing to prepare for the game to be played.

Key Background:

The Indianapolis Colts briefly closed their facility Friday morning after four tests, involving one player and three staff members, came back positive. However, all four individuals were later retested, and each test was negative. “After consultation with the NFL and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Allen Sills, the team will open the practice facility this afternoon under the league’s intensive protocol and will continue preparation for Sunday’s game against Cincinnati,” the team said in a statement Friday. The Atlanta Falcons had closed their facility Thursday following a second positive Covid-19 test but reopened on Friday.

Crucial Quote:

“You’re never foolproof here. A virus is a virus,” Colts coach Coach Frank Reich told reporters on Friday. “But I think our guys have done such a good job. We’re not perfect, but I think we’ve been very diligent.”

Big Number:

8 million. As of Saturday morning, more than 8,090,500 people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus.
