Jewish Group Raps Trump For ‘Nazi-Inspired’ Eagle On Campaign T-Shirt

President Trump continued to take heat on social media Thursday for a campaign re-election T-shirt that a Jewish group called “Nazi-inspired” because of a stylized eagle, marking the second time in recent weeks the president has been accused of using Nazi symbols in his re-election bid.

KEY FACTS

The $30 T-shirt, which is “proudly made in the USA,”  is advertised on shop.donaldjtrump.com  showing an eagle with its wings spread and head facing its left similar to the Iron Eagle, the official symbol of the Nazi party,  Bend the Arc: Jewish Action said in one of several posts on the topic on Twitter.

The Twitter post from Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, which describes itself as a “movement of progressive Jews across the country who are fighting for justice and equality for all,” charges that “President of the United States is campaigning for re-election with a Nazi symbol. Again…It’s not an accident. Bigotry is their entire brand.”

Last month, Facebook removed Trump ads that contained a red triangle, a symbol once used by Nazis to designate political prisoners.

“In Democrats’ America, Mount Rushmore glorifies white supremacy and the bald eagle with an American flag is a Nazi symbol. They have lost their minds,”  Tim Murtaugh, Trump 2020 communications director, said in an email to Forbes, calling the complaint “moronic.”

The eagle on the official presidential seal faces its right, and its wings are more elevated than the Trump T-shirt image, causing one Twitter poster to note “Many countries use eagles on their flags. Somehow, they all manage to not look like a Nazi eagle crest, including the Great Seal.”

The Tweets had more than 30,000 likes and nearly 20,000 retweets Thursday.

From the early days of his 2015 election campaign, Trump has been criticized for making insensitive comments or taking insensitive actions with regard to race, including retweeting, then  removing, a video in which a white supporter shouts “white power.” The president has largely brushed off the criticism. On Wednesday, the president said a “Black Lives Matter” mural painted on a New York City street would be “a symbol of hate.”
