John Boyega Joins Celebrities Turning Out For Protests

Star Wars lead John Boyega gave an impassioned speech against racism and police brutality at a protest in London’s Hyde Park on Wednesday, joining other stars who have hit the streets in the wake of George Floyd’s death in police custody.

Fellow Brit Harry Styles marched in Los Angeles this week and was photographed carrying a sign that read “Black Lives Matter,” and kneeling with demonstrators. 

Singer Ariana Grande also took part in a Los Angeles protest Saturday, wearing a mask and carrying a sign emblazoned with “Black Lives Matter,” before encouraging her nearly 75 million Twitter followers to stay engaged and active in peaceful protests.

Actor and singer Jamie Foxx took the stage at San Francisco City Hall on Monday and encouraged his “Hollywood friends” to get involved in the protest movement.

Rapper and Masked Singer host Nick Cannon traveled to Minneapolis to protest where Floyd died. In a piece for Variety, he wrote, “I needed to see the people in that community—how much love they had for their community and their people and how much pain this has caused.”

Former Disney star and current Riverdale lead Cole Sprouse was arrested after protesting in Santa Monica on Sunday, after which he told fans via an Instagram post, “it needs to be stated that as a straight white man, and a public figure, the institutional consequences of my detainment are nothing in comparison to others within the movement.”

Westworld star Tessa Thompson documented her experience at a Los Angeles protest Saturday for fans through Twitter and Instagram posts, while singers Halsey and Yungblud were spotted by fans over the weekend at protests in Los Angeles and Santa Monica, California, treating protesters’ rubber bullet wounds. 

Legendary Houston rapper Bun B teamed up with fellow rapper Trae The Truth, who knew Floyd personally growing up in Houston, to join Floyd’s family in a march through the city Tuesday that Mayor Sylvester Turner said drew 60,000 people.

“Black lives have always mattered. We have always been important. We have always meant something. We have always succeeded regardless. And now is the time. I ain’t waiting,” Boyega told London protesters Friday. 

KEY BACKGROUND

People across the world have turned out in droves to protest racism and police brutality since the May 25 death of George Floyd, who Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned to the ground by kneeling on Floyd’s neck. Chauvin and three other officers involved in the arrest were fired the next day. Chauvin has been charged with second degree unintentional murder, and the other three with aiding and abetting.
