Judge Orders Release Of Bodycam Footage In George Floyd Case

TOPLINE

A Minnesota judge ordered the bodycam footage taken by officers during the fatal arrest of George Floyd be made publicly available, according to the Associated Press.

KEY FACTS

Judge Peter Cahill ruled on Friday that footage taken by the body cameras of Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, two of the former officers charged with killing George Floyd, be publicly released, though a release date has not been set.

Transcripts of the audio were previously released, and the footage could be seen only by appointment.

The Daily Mail, a London-based British tabloid, leaked segments of the footage on Monday.

That footage showed Floyd struggling with officers in the back of a police car, and saying, “I can’t breathe.”

A coalition of media organisations petitioned Cahil to make the footage public, which had been turned over to the court by Lane’s attorney as part of a motion to have Lane’s case dismissed.

Key Background

Floyd, a Black man, died while handcuffed on May 25 after Chauvin, a white police officer, pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. The body cam footage shows the officer’s view of Floyd’s death, which was captured on a cellphone camera by an eye-witness and prompted world-wide protests in support of the Black Lives movement and sparked a national conversation about the nature of policing and racial bias in law enforcement. Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. The other three former officers were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter.
