Lawyer For Biden Accuser Tara Reade Drops Her As A Client

TOPLINE

The attorney for Tara Reade, the former Senate aide who has accused Joe Biden of sexually assaulting her 27 years ago, announced Friday he would no longer represent her, just two weeks after taking her on as a client.

KEY FACTS

Reade has accused Biden of assaulting her in the Senate complex in 1993, claiming he pressed her up against a wall, kissed her neck and penetrated her with his fingers after prying her legs open with his knees; an accusation that Biden vehemently denies.

Earlier the week, defense lawyers in California said they began investigating whether Reade had committed perjury by misrepresenting her academic qualifications when she testified under oath that she had a college degree from Antioch University.

An Antioch spokeswoman, Karen Hamilton, told The New York Times that while Ms. Reade had attended classes, she was certain Ms. Reade had not received a degree; the university added that she only did administrative work and it has no record of her graduating.

On Friday, attorney Douglas H. Wigdor, a prominent lawyer in major #MeToo cases against Bill O’Reilly and Harvey Weinstein, announced that he and his firm would no longer represent Reade as a client.

Wigdor offered no specific reason, but said his decision was “by no means a reflection on whether then-Senator Biden sexually assaulted Ms. Reade.”

Reade has declined to comment on her lawyer’s departure.

Critical quote:

“Much of what has been written about Ms. Reade is not probative of whether then-Senator Biden sexually assaulted her, but rather is intended to victim-shame and attack her credibility on unrelated and irrelevant matters,” Douglas H. Wigdor said. “We have and will continue to represent survivors regardless of their alleged predator’s status or politics.”

Key Background:

Back in April of 2019, Reade was one of eight women who accused Biden of inappropriate touching. Then, speaking on a podcast in March of this year, Reade claimed Biden sexually assaulted her in 1993 by penetrating her digitally. Reade said she did not share the full story previously because she feared retribution. Biden addressed the allegations publicly for the first time on May 1st, telling MSNBC’s Morning Joe: “No, it is not true. I’m saying unequivocally it never, never happened. And it didn’t. It never happened.”
