Madison Protesters Condemned For Toppling Statue Of Anti-Slavery Activist

TOPLINE

Protesters in Wisconsin drew condemnation late on Tuesday after tearing down the statue of abolitionist Hans Christian Heg, smashing windows at the state house and assaulting a state senator, marking a departure from previous demonstrations targeting symbols of colonizers and Confederate figures.

KEY FACTS

Protesters in Madison targeted the Wisconsin State Capitol on Tuesday, smashing windows and lights late into the night before around 20 police officers in riot gear arrived at around 1 a.m.

The unrest began after Black Lives Matter protester Yeshua Musa was arrested earlier that day, after he brought a megaphone and baseball bat into a restaurant in Capitol Square, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Democratic state Sen. Tim Carpenter told the paper he was punched after trying to take a picture of protesters: “All I did was stop and take a picture…and the next thing I’m getting five-six punches, getting kicked in the head.”

Two statues—one of Wisconsin’s ‘FORWARD’ motto and another of abolitionist Hans Christian Heg, were targeted and removed from their positions in front of the statehouse.

Heg’s statue was beheaded and thrown into a lake after being rolled through the city.

The protesters were condemned as “thugs” by Republican state Assembly leader Robin Vos, who tweeted: “This is absolutely despicable. I am saddened at the cowardice of Madison officials to deal with these thugs.”

Key background

Tuesday night’s protests followed weeks of anti-racism protesters targeting racist symbols and toppling statues of colonizers, slave owners and confederate figures representing a legacy of racial injustice in the U.S. But the Madison protests drew criticism for targeting anti-slavery activist Heg. Born in Norway, Heg was an outspoken activist against slavery and died fighting for the Union during the Civil War.

News peg

Anti-racism protests have swept across the U.S. and other global cities for the past month, following the death of unarmed Black man George Floyd when white police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. The protests have been mostly peaceful, while monuments of racist figures and other publicly displayed symbols of oppression have become flashpoints in demonstrators’ urging reform and racial justice.
