CHENNAI: The Madras high court refused to allow reopening of Vedanta’s copper smelter on Tuesday. The smelter has been shut for more than two years over pollution concerns.
In May 2018, 13 people died in protest against alleged pollution from the smelter. A week after that, the Tamil Nadu government ordered the smelter shut.
A spokeswoman for Sterlite Copper, a unit of Vedanta Ltd, did not immediately comment on the matter.
A lawyer for the Tamil Nadu government did not respond to messages and calls seeking comment on the court judgment.
