Meet Diageo’s 2020 Distillers Edition Collection

Fans of Diageo’s lineup of single malts have something new to be on the hunt for: six new limited-edition single malts from some of its most iconic distilleries.

The 2020 Distillers Edition lineup showcases what can happen to whisky when it goes through second maturation in a wine cask. Back of the Distillers Edition whiskies uses the distillery’s core offering as the base whisky and then matures that offering a second time, giving is a distinctive new flavor.

This year’s collection includes offerings from Lagavulin, Oban, Talisker, Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, and Glenkinchie. Each whisky was first aged in a cask made ou t of American Oak crafted specifically for use with that distillery. After the whisky is removed, the casks are filled with fortified wine from Spain or Portugal for a month, then the whisky is once again placed in the barrel for a second maturation, up to six months in length.

“The annual Distillers Edition whiskies are incredibly rare and special due to the finishing process the whisky undertakes and the superior craftsmanship of our distillery teams. The team understands the intricacies of coopering and how exploring different casks add to the dynamic world of flavors, resulting in extremely rounded limited-edition expressions unlike anything else you’ll find on the shelf of your liquor store or spirits shop,” US Director of Single Malts Jamie Young said in a prepared statement.

Each whisky in the collection is bottled in a single batch and then marked with the date of distillation as well as a bottling and batch number to highlight the expression’s rarity.

2020 Oban Distillers Edition

2006 Oban double-matured in ex-bodega Montilla Fino cask wood for a rich fruitiness and maritime flavors that bond with the fresh, sweet aromas and tastes of the adored Oban 14 Year Old in an explosive, rich and deep expression of Oban
