Metallica’s ‘Black Album’ Reissue Is Much More Than A Simple Rerelease

It comes as no surprise to see that Metallica’s biggest reissue yet happens to be for their most popularized album — The Black Album. Of all the albums to go all out for, Metallica’s monumental self-titled album is the obvious choice. Apart from being hailed as one of the best rock records ever written, the record is 16 times platinum and has managed to stay in the Billboard Top 200 for over 550 weeks straight. In fact, it was actually the band’s first No. 1 charting record back when it was released in 1991. Now 20 years later, Metallica has announced the details for their long awaited Black Album reissue, and right out of the gate the packaging seems to acknowledge this album’s legendary stature.

Arriving September 10th, The Black Album reissue will include a remastered version of iconic record as well as a little something more unique, the Blacklist album. This is a compilation record that features 53 artists who’ve performed a covered of one of the 12 tracks from The Black Album:

“With contributions from countries all over the globe from the U.S. to Nigeria, there are tracks from singer-songwriters, country artists, electronic, and hip-hop artists alongside punk rockers, indie darlings, icons of rock, metal, world music, and many, many more covering the entire spectrum from musicians we’ve shared the stage with, to some who were not even born yet when the original album was released!”

The array of different styles and artists featured on this compilation album is something truly special, and it really goes to show that the impact of The Black Album has gone beyond simply rock music. Big name artists from the likes of Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Weezer, Elton John and dozens more have contributed to ‘The Metallica Blacklist.’ And taking it all one one step further, Metallica has stated that 100 percent of the proceeds from the The Black Album reissue will be split between Metallica’s own charity organization, All Within My Hands, and a chosen charity from each of the featured artists.

“In addition to raising money for charity, we wanted to show that Metallica’s music transcends genres, distance, and cultures, and we like to think that – with everyone’s help – we’ve done just that. It was important to us that the artists could choose whichever song they most connected to; it didn’t matter if we already had multiple versions of a song, if an artist wanted to cover that song, so be it. We were honored to have artists of this caliber want to be a part of the project and we hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed putting it all together!”

While there’s a variety of unique artists contributing to this reissue, Metallica has recruited a fair share of popular rock/hard rock acts such as Ghost, Corey Taylor, The Hu, Idles, White Reaper, Royal Blood, and Volbeat. Many of these rock artists have toured with Metallica over the years so it’s fitting to see them make the cut for this tribute album. And while The Black Album is less of a metal record and more in line with hard rock, it still would have been cool to see Metallica call on some of their more ‘metal’ allies like Machine Head, Gojira or Slipknot. Although Ghost are more in tune with the metal crowd, I can’t help but wonder what a more extreme band like Gojira would have done with a song like “Enter Sandman” or “Wherever I May Roam.”
