Metro Boomin And 21 Savage Debut Their Surprise Release ‘Savage Mode II’ At No. 1

Super producer Metro Boomin and rapper 21 Savage are both back at No. 1 on this week’s Billboard 200 with a joint collection that arrived with little warning, but apparently fans didn’t need long to rush to hear what they two had cooked up in the studio.

Savage Mode II opens in first place on the Billboard 200 with 171,000 equivalent units shifted, a sizable first frame. That sum includes just 22,000 pure sales, while nearly all the rest are streaming equivalents. The 15 songs present on the title’s tracklist were played 200 million times in the first seven days they were available in the U.S., which breaks down to 148,000 streaming equivalent units.

Savage Mode II is the second champion on the Billboard 200 for both Metro Boomin and 21 Savage. The former first reached the summit in late 2018 on his own with Not All Heroes Wear Capes, while the latter act landed his first ruler just weeks later, as his set I Am > I Was landed atop the chart in December 2018.

In addition to their two No. 1 titles, both artists have placed two other albums inside the top 10 on the Billboard 200, though they weren’t collaborations with one another.

Savage Mode II was announced just a short time before it arrived, so it wasn’t preceded by any singles. When the Hot 100 refreshes in a day or so, the two musicians will likely send at least a few tracks from their new full-length to the tally, and they stand a good chance at dominating the hip-hop-only rankings as well.

21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s Savage Mode II follows in the footsteps of the EP Savage Mode, which arrived in 2016 and which rose as high as No. 23.

Savage Mode II beats several other releases to the top of the Billboard 200, as new sets by the likes of Blackpink, YG, Bryson Tiller and LANY all open inside the top 10 on the ranking of the most-consumed projects in America.
