Miami To Restart Indoor Dining After Almost 2 Months Of Closures

TOPLINE

Restaurants in one of the largest U.S. counties will be able to reopen for indoor dining at the end of this month, as officials in Miami-Dade County, Florida, announced Tuesday that restrictions would be lifted Aug. 31.

KEY FACTS

Restaurants in the city of Miami and surrounding communities have been closed since July 9, when south Florida was dealing with one of the most significant coronavirus outbreaks of anywhere in the world.

The coronavirus crisis has since greatly improved, and Miami-Dade’s testing positivity rate is now around 10%, the threshold local officials had targeted before reopening dining rooms.

Pressure had been building from restaurant owners and local officeholders for Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez to reopen dining rooms, the Miami Herald reported.

Restaurants will be able to seat dining rooms at 50% capacity, according to the Miami Herald.

Doors and windows are also required to be kept open, and air conditioners must stay on to increase air flow.

KEY BACKGROUND

Restaurants were ordered to close down dine-in service in July, when south Florida was a coronavirus hot spot. Many ICUs across the county reached their normal capacity during the month of July, as positivity rates soared. But the outbreak has taken a sharp decline in Miami-Dade recently, as it has in much of the rest of Florida and in summer hot spots across the U.S.

TANGENT

Most cities are allowing indoor dining, but that’s not the case in New York City, where it remains unclear when restaurants might be able to reopen dining rooms. That’s drawn the ire of the NYC Hospitality Alliance, whose executive director is demanding that Mayor Bill de Blasio release a reopening plan.
