Miniature Harry Potter Book Handwritten By J.K. Rowling Could Sell For $180,000 At Auction

A miniature Harry Potter book handwritten by J.K. Rowling is expected to sell for over $180,000 at auction this month.

The unique book measures only 1.6 x 2.4 inches, and its 31 pages comprise sketches and extracts from the list of school supplies and instructions Harry Potter receives when he is invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The book was originally handwritten by J.K. Rowling in 2004 for a charity auction.

The book originally sold for $12,000 in 2004 at a charity auction filled with tiny books written by Rowling, Madonna, Sir Paul McCartney and around 20 other celebrities, all for 999 Club to benefit the homeless community in south London.

The current auction with Just Collecting will close on March 26, and the book is expected to sell for between $125,000 and $175,000.

“For rare book collectors and Harry Potter fans, this is the ultimate prize,” Just Collecting’s Dan Wade said. “Sure, you could own one of the 500 first edition hardbacks of Philosopher’s Stone, you could even hunt down one of the seven handwritten copies of Rowling’s The Tales of Beedle the Bard – but there is only one copy of this book.”

The book series featured in 2019 on Antiques Roadshow, where two Harry Potter books were valued at just under $4000. In 2013, an annotated first edition copy with over 20 original drawings and notes sold for $228,000 in a charity auction by Sotheby’s. A new world record was set at Bonhams in November 2017, when a first edition copy of the first book sold for around $139,000. Other Potter ‘antique’ sales include leather-bound, handwritten and illustrated copies of Rowling’s companion book The Tales of Beedle the Bard, an exclusive seventh copy of which was sold by Sotheby’s for $3.98 million in 2007, benefiting J.K. Rowling’s children’s charity Lumos.
