Most Parents Polled Want Full-Time, In-Person School To Resume This Fall

TOPLINE

Just more than half of American parents with children ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade favor a return to in-person school attendance this fall, according to a Gallup poll released Thursday.

KEY FACTS

56% of 1,200 parents surveyed supported a return to full-time, in-person schooling,  compared to part-time instruction (37%) or remote learning (7%) options.

37% said they would prefer a hybrid program, where students attend in-person classes on a part-time basis and make up the rest with distance learning.

A small 7% of respondents supported continuing the full-time remote learning many schools turned to during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The overwhelming support for at least some in-person instruction may indicate the strain placed on American households during the pandemic, as many parents work from home and are left without childcare as children needed help to complete schoolwork.

Concern over the Covid-19 virus appears to be a major indicator of how parents feel about sending their children back to school, with respondents who say they are less bothered by the virus more likely to support schools reopening than parents who are worried about their children becoming infected.

KEY BACKGROUND

State officials announced Thursday that Texas public schools will be permitted to open for full-time, in-person classes in time for the start of the upcoming school year. Other states have been largely undecided about whether or not to have schools open full-time or on a part-time basis with remote learning making up the difference. The U.S. remains the country hardest-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, with nearly 2.2 million confirmed cases and more than 118,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
