Nancy Pelosi Endorses Joe Biden, Further Consolidating Democratic Party’s Support

TOPLINE

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi endorsed Democratic presumptive nominee Joe Biden for president in a prerecorded video, the latest show of consolidated support in the Democratic Party for Biden ahead of November’s presidential election.

KEY FACTS

“I am proud to endorse Joe Biden for president: a leader who is the personification of hope and courage, values, authenticity and integrity,” Pelosi says in the video.

Pelosi said during the coronavirus pandemic, Biden has been a voice of “resilience and reason” and has a “clear path to lead us out of this crisis.”

Pelosi also pointed towards Biden’s vice presidential record on implementing the 2009 Recovery Act during the financial crisis, along with his work on the Affordable Care Act and supporting military veterans, among other areas.

Pelosi remained neutral during the primary, publicly remarking that the Democratic Party must unite behind the goal of defeating President Trump in November.

Biden is moving to take control of the party; his campaign manager said Friday that a new chief executive has been appointed to the Democratic National Committee, and the two groups signed a joint fundraising agreement.

Biden previously secured endorsements from former President Barack Obama, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass, among other high-profile Democrats.

Crucial quote

“With so much at stake, we need the enthusiasm, invigoration and participation of all Americans—up and down the ballot, and across the country,” Pelosi said. “With a Democratic majority in the House and Senate, we will deliver bold progress for the people, when we have President Joe Biden in the White House.”

Key background

Pelosi last endorsed a candidate before the conclusion of the primaries in 2004, when she backed Rep. Richard A. Gephardt, D-Mo., according to the Washington Post. Biden is about 600 delegates short of the 1,991 needed to secure the party’s nomination. But after Sanders suspended his campaign in early April, Biden was the last candidate standing—all but guaranteeing him the nomination.
