Nationwide Protests For Breonna Taylor Continue For A Second Night

Topline

Protesters across the U.S. took to the streets in cities including Louisville, New York and Los Angeles for a second night following the Kentucky attorney general’s announcement on Wednesday that none of the police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor would be indicted for her death.

Key Facts

Protesters in Louisville were out past the 9p.m. curfew during a second night of protests in the city, while at least 24 people were arrested after police declared an unlawful assembly, LMPD said in a statement on Facebook.

In Los Angeles, a vehicle plowed through protesters on Thursday night, hitting one person directly before heading down Sunset Boulevard, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Another vehicle on Sunset Boulevard, a white Prius, also tried to drive through a group of protesters in order to get through the crowd, according to one witness and the LAPD is investigating the drivers in both incidents, the LAPD said.

Protests in Portland that have continued since the death of George Floyd on Memorial Day were renewed following Wednesday’s decision, while police declared an unlawful assembly outside the city’s Police Association building.

Hundreds of protesters in New York City were seen marching through parts of Manhattan on Thursday, with demonstrators gathering outside Union Square before marching west.

Key Background

Protests erupted in Louisville and nationwide on Wednesday following Kentucky AG Daniel Cameron’s announcement that only one of three officers involved in Taylor’s shooting, Brett Hankison, would be charged with “wanton endangerment in the first degree” for shooting into a nearby apartment, while a grand jury did not recommend criminal charges against the other two officers involved, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove. Taylor, a 26-year-old ER technician, was fatally shot on March 13 when the three officers entered her home using a no-knock warrant, and were fired at once by her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who thought the officers were intruders, who then fired back more than 20 times, killing her during a raid. Wednesday’s decision was a huge blow following months of protests and awareness raiding around Taylor’s death, with campaigners and celebrities criticising the decision as racist. Earlier this month, the city of Louisville agreed to pay Taylor’s family a $12 million settlement as part of a wrongful death lawsuit.

Big Number

127. That’s how many people were arrested in Louisville during Wednesday night’s protests. CNN reports that two journalists with conservative news site The Daily Caller were among those arrested in Louisville on Wednesday night.

What To Watch For

26-year-old Larynzo Johnson, who was charged on Thursday related to the shooting of two police officers in Louisville during Wednesday’s protests, will be arraigned on Friday.
