Nearly Three Times As Many Black Americans Are Dying From Covid-19 Compared With White People As Pandemic Death Toll Surpasses 150,000 [Infographic]

150,000 Americans have now died from Covid-19 and the grim milestone comes as California, Florida and Texas all set one-day records for deaths from the coronavirus. The U.S recorded 1,461 deaths on Wednesday alone, its highest single day increase since May 27 when its death toll was 1,484. Over the past 24 hours, one American died from Covid-19 every minute while the total number of cases currently stands at 4.4 million. Studies have found that nearly twice as many men are dying from Covid-19 as women while the pandemic has proven especially devastating for black Americans. They are dying at nearly three times the rate of white people according to data from The COVID Tracking Project.

30,648 black lives have been lost to the coronavirus to date and they account for 23% of all U.S. deaths where race is known. The COVID Tracking Project broke deaths down by race or ethnicity with 74 black Americans dying per 100,000 people as of July 30, 2020. By comparison, that figure stands at 30 deaths per 100,000 for white Americans and 31 per 100,000 for Asian Americans. The figure is also higher for American Indian or Alaska Natives and Hispanics or Latinos who both have 40 deaths per 100,000 people. The situation in Chicago serves as a further illustration of the economic and racial disparities highlighted by Covid-19. As of late May, black residents accounted for 60% of the city’s coronavirus deaths despite making up 30% of its population.
