Netflix Reveals Premiere Date For ‘Selena: The Series,’ About Late Music Icon

Adoring fans of the late Selena Quintanilla will finally get a chance to see the family-approved series about the star’s life, 25 years after the young singer’s untimely death at the height of her career.

released a teaser video announcing a December premiere date for the much anticipated Selena: The Series, a biographical drama about the Queen of Tejano music, shot and killed on March 31, 1995 by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club, when she was just 23.

The streamer announced there will be two parts to the coming-of-age story following Selena’s journey as a young artist, from singing small gigs in Corpus Christi with her family to becoming one of the most successful Latin artists of all time, while navigating the highs and lows of success, loss and love on her path to stardom.

The Walking Dead star Christian Serratos portrays the late singer. Other cast members include: Madison Taylor Baez as a young Selena; Ricardo Chavira as her father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr.; Seidy Lopez as her mother, Marcella; Gabriel Chavarria as her brother A.B.; and Noemi Gonzalez as her sister Suzette. 

Selena’s family criticized and blocked efforts to produce other projects about the star without their approval. They were, however, involved in Selena: The Series. 

Netflix first announced the bioseries in 2018, shortly after the late star’s father won a lawsuit against Selena’s widower Chris Perez, preventing him from doing a TV series about his romance with the singer. That project would have been based on his book “To Selena With Love.”

Jaime Dávila, Rico Martinez, Hiromi Kamata, Suzette Quintanilla, Simran A. Singh and Moises Zamora are executive producers. The series was created by Zamora, with Don Todd (“This is Us”) consulting.

Part one of the two-part series premieres on Netflix on December 4, 2020.
