Nevada Certifies Election Results, Making Biden’s Victory Official

Topline

Nevada certified its election results Tuesday, including President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the state, becoming the fourth major battleground state to do so and further cementing the presidential election results, despite the Trump campaign’s ongoing legal efforts.

Key Facts

The Nevada Supreme Court approved the state’s election results Tuesday, and Biden won by a margin of 33,596 votes over President Donald Trump.

Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania have also now certified Biden’s victories, and North Carolina, which went for Trump, also certified their results Tuesday.

Even if the Trump campaign were to successfully block certification in the remaining battleground states that voted for Biden, Arizona and Wisconsin, the president-elect would still have more than 270 electoral votes.

Key Background

Nevada’s certification comes despite a number of GOP legal challenges to the state’s election results and counting process, and the Trump campaign’s baseless accusations of voter fraud in the state. Trump campaign legal advisor Jenna Ellis said Monday certification “is simply a procedural step” that would not stop the campaign’s legal challenges to the election outcome. Legal experts have said they are almost certain to fail. Certification is “much more than another step in the road, it’s a nail in the coffin for these absurd claims,” Norm Eisen, outside counsel for the Voter Protection Program, told reporters on a call Tuesday, and the state certifications are an “inflection point” for the Trump campaign’s legal strategy. “[Ellis] can say whatever she wants, reality disagrees.”

What To Watch For

The next battleground state expected to certify results is Arizona, where all the counties have completed that step and Gov. Doug Ducey faces a Nov. 30 deadline. Ducey, a Republican, acknowledged Biden’s win in the state in an interview Tuesday and suggested he will certify the results without any issues. Wisconsin will be the final closely- watched state to certify its results by Dec. 1, after several counties complete a recount that’s currently underway after being ordered by the Trump campaign.
