New York Giants Fire Offensive Line Coach Marc Colombo

In case it wasn’t clear two weeks ago when receiver Golden Tate caught the wrath of head coach Joe Judge after putting a “me-first” outburst on display in front of a national television audience, Judge made it clear again Wednesday—this time by his actions—that he won’t tolerate any “me-first” attitudes from anyone on the team’s payroll.

Offensive line coach Marc Colombo became the latest member of the organization to catch Judge’s wrath, leading to his dismissal from his duties on Wednesday.

“We appreciate what Marc has done, but I felt like this move is in the best interest of the team,” Judge said in a statement released by the team.

The decision to part way with Colombo came when the offensive line coach and former NFL offensive tackle was said to have bristled at the idea of sharing his coaching duties with Dave DeGuglielmo. He will take over for Colombo once he completes his COVID-19 entry protocols.

Colombo’s Giants offensive line caught some early season flack for their lack of cohesiveness, which in particular seemed to affect first-round draft pick Andrew Thomas, whose first six or so weeks raised some questions about whether the Giants had made a mistake selecting Thomas as the first offensive tackle off the board.

Thomas’s struggles reportedly led to Judge spending less time being able to visit with the different units on the team because of his desire to see what was going on with the offensive line.

So when he decided to bring in DeGuglielmo, whose speciality is offensive line, to provide an extra set of eyes for Colombo, that move was not well-received.

Accordingly, Judge, who during the Tate incident made it clear that there was no room for any “me-first” attitudes, decided to part ways with Colombo.

“Every coach and every player has to be team first; there are no exceptions for that,” Judge said a couple of weeks ago in response to the Tate incident.

“I’m not going to tolerate and put up with any kind of selfish behavior from anybody, coach or player; it’s not going to happen.”

He wasn’t kidding.
