The first round of the 2020 NFL Draft is just a few days away, an event that will will serve as a much-needed breath of fresh air for sports fans. With the sporting world on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, fans have been starved for live events to focus their attention on. While the NFL Draft won’t mark a return to normalcy for the league—the event is being held remotely via teleconference for the first time ever due to safety concerns of hosting it live in Las Vegas as originally planned—it will still showcase all 32 teams in the league making a total of 255 selections across seven rounds over three exciting days. The 2020 NFL Draft also marks the first time that sports bettors will be able to place a wager down on a live broadcast from one of the four major American sports since they began shutting down in mid-March.
The 2020 NFL Draft has the potential to be one of the most unpredictable drafts of all time, given teams haven’t been able to conduct one-on-one interviews and workouts with prospects leading up to the event. This means coaches and general managers don’t have as much information on their top targets as they have been accustomed to and will be relying more on film and NFL Combine results than usual. The pandemic also effects how these organizations will conduct the draft, as they will have to forego the typical “war room” setup with their decision-makers and scouts together and instead make decisions on the fly in a much more sparse teleconference environment. No one is sure how this shift will impact teams when they are on the clock, but bookmakers are giving bettors more options than ever to wager on what could wind up being one of the most wild drafts to ever take place.
Because of the NFL Draft is drawing increased attention this year, shops have come up with a myriad of ways for fans to bet on not only the draft results—such as which teams the most notable prospects will land with or the number of players at certain positions to be selected in the first round— but also unique occurrences during the broadcast itself, including who the No. 1 overall pick will hug first after being selected, the over/under on the number of dogs that will be shown during the draft and if a draftee will experience technical difficulties when conferencing in for a reaction. There is even a prop bet on whether or not a first-round pick will recreate the now famous photograph of the scene at Brett Favre’s house when he was taken in the 1991 NFL Draft, something Baker Mayfield did leading up to becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Some of the props for the 2020 NFL Draft have already become popular enough to see some notable line movement. The books stand to suffer major losses if Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert, one of the fastest-rising prospects this offseason, is picked ahead of Alabama signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa, a player who has recently seen his stock drop due to injury concerns. It’s clear that the public isn’t buying Tua as a top-three pick anymore, as the over/under on Tagovailoa’s draft position has been adjusted down to 5.5 after initially going up on the board at 3.5. Herbert isn’t the only player gaining steam based on odds movement either, with Clemson cornerback A.J. Terrell jumping from an underdog to be selected in the first round to a -260 favorite to be taken on the first day of the 2020 NFL Draft. Cesar Ruiz, Michigan’s talented offensive lineman, is also looking like a lock to go in Round 1 after his odds moved from -150 to not be a first day selection all the way to -275 to be taken within the first 32 picks.
Covers believes that Tua would have been in contention for the No. 1 overall pick this year—something LSU quarterback Joe Burrow has all but secured based on the odds—had he remained healthy, but still shouldn’t slip past the Miami Dolphins at No. 5:
There are plenty of other fun props up on the board for the 2020 NFL Draft and a full list of them, as well as all the player and team props for the event, can be found below courtesy of SportsBetting.ag. Those looking for advice on how to bet the draft should check back tomorrow, as pro handicapper Jon Price of SportsInformationTraders.com will be providing his complete first-round mock draft and top wagers for Thursday’s initial 32 selections.
