Nissan Titan Pickups, Armada SUVs, Infiniti QX65 Included In Takata Airbag Recall

Problems with Takata airbags keep cropping up six years after serious problems began surfacing with the safety equipment that has been installed in tens of million of cars and trucks. The latest worldwide recall from Nissan includes 250,000 vehicles, according to the Associated Press.

Models involved include includes certain 2012 to 2017 Nissan NV Cargo and Passenger vans, 2013 to 2015 Nissan Titan pickups and Armada SUVs, and the Infiniti QX56 SUV from 2011 and 2012. Owners can check their VIN numbers to see if they are included in the recall through the NHTSA website.

The AP reports that at least 25 fatalities and 300 injuries have been attributed to the airbags exploding and showing occupants with shrapnel because they were packed with too much propellant. The metal cartridge that holds the propellant apparently improperly ruptures, sending metal shards flying at high speed into occupants. Some airbags also lack a drying agent that causes the airbags to improperly inflate. In the United States, 16 fatalities have been attributed to the issue.

In all, the Takata airbag recall saga has affected more than 40 million vehicles in the United States alone. Takata airbags were used in vehicles across 19 different carmakers. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2017 under the weight of fines and lost business from the recall and their efforts to cover up the problems, which date back to 2002. The majority of the recalls affect vehicles made between 2002 and 2015, but all car owners are urged to check to see if their vehicle is on the recall list.
