Nobody Is Talking About The ‘Impractical Jokers’ Movie’s Impressive Box Office Run

While Emma keeps making waves with its record-breaking limited run, there’s another semi-wide-release movie that’s putting together quite the domestic gross—and it’s gone largely unnoticed.

After just 20 days of its limited run, Impractical Jokers: The Movie has eclipsed the $10 million mark at the domestic box office. This past week the film had yet another great showing, pulling together $2.5 million to finish in ninth place amongst all movies. That total was a slight step down from its $3.1 million opening week and its $3.8 million second week.

The key to the movie’s success was its gigantic theater expansion. During its opening weekend, Impractical Jokers only played in 357 theaters nationwide. Still, the movie managed $2.6 million and finished in 11th place. That averaged out to $7,302 earned per theater, which fared slightly better than the weekend’s top two films: The Call of the Wild and Sonic the Hedgehog. By week’s end, that per-theater average would rise to $7,742—the highest of the top 20 films at the box office.

That high average led to a 1,543-theater expansion for Impractical Jokers’ second week. While the per-theater average dipped down to $1,894 on that second weekend, its domestic gross jumped to $3.6 million. That brought the movie’s lifetime earnings to $6.7 million after a 10-day limited run. By the end of last week, that total had risen to $6.9 million.

After a 125-theater dip and the presence of coronavirus, the drop in weekly earnings is understandable. Showing in 1,775 theaters this past weekend, Impractical Jokers stood strong in ninth place at the domestic box office with $1.8 million. Sporting its worst per-theater average to date ($1,039), it certainly felt like the movie’s best days were behind it—especially after the movie only added another $600,000 to its total between Monday and Thursday.

Yesterday the movie experienced its worst day of its semi-wide release yet with about $130,000 culled from those 1,775 theaters. And this weekend, we can expect that theater count to only dip further down.

Still, Impractical Jokers’ three-week limited run has been incredibly impressive. While its weeknight showings have been poor, the movie’s weekend earnings have steadily remained above average and kept it afloat. Impractical Jokers will likely raise its total to around $15 million by the end of its run—not bad for a movie with a $3 million budget.
