Obama To Unleash Harsh Criticism In DNC Speech: ‘Donald Trump Hasn’t Grown Into The Job Because He Can’t’

TOPLINE

Former President Barack Obama appears set to make his most scathing public remarks on Donald Trump yet during his Democratic National Convention speech on Wednesday night, excerpts show, accusing his successor of having “no interest in treating the presidency as anything but one more reality show he can use to get the attention he craves.”

KEY FACTS

Though the ex-president has criticized Trump openly before, offering a sharp attack during Rep. John Lewis’s funeral, the remarks slated for Wednesday night’s speech are notably biting.

“He’s shown no interest in putting in the work,” Obama reportedly plans to say, “no interest in finding common ground; no interest in using the awesome power of his office to help anyone but himself and his friends.”

Obama will focus on Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, describing the U.S.’s current situation as a “severe” consequence of the president’s inability to grow into his job.

“170,000 Americans dead,” Obama will say, “Millions of jobs gone. Our worst impulses unleashed, our proud reputation around the world badly diminished, and our democratic institutions threatened like never before.”

On a lighter note, Obama will also address his years of working alongside Biden.

“Twelve years ago, when I began my search for a vice president, I didn’t know I’d end up finding a brother,” Obama will say, according to excerpts.

“I listen to that and see the horror he left us with, the stupidity of the transactions he made,” said Trump when asked about Obama’s comments during a Wednesday presser. “President Obama did not do a good job,” Trump continued, saying that if Joe Biden and Trump had done better, he wouldn’t have run for president.

Key Background

Former First Lady Michelle Obama, who spoke Monday night, criticized Trump as “the wrong president for our country.” Trump immediately clapped back with a slew of tweets accusing the speech of being “very divisive” and Michelle Obama being “in over her head.” “Somebody please explain to @MichelleObama that Donald J. Trump would not be here, in the beautiful White House, if it weren’t for the job done by your husband, Barack Obama,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

What to watch for

Obama will scorn Trump and offer support for former Vice President Joe Biden from Philadelphia’s Museum of the American Revolution. Biden’s running mate Kamala Harris, 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren are also headlining the DNC’s third night.
