‘Orange Is The New Black’ Creator Is Bringing A Coronavirus Series To Netflix

TOPLINE

Filming on Hollywood sets has largely been suspended during the coronavirus pandemic, but Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan is getting started on a new Netflix anthology series called Social Distancing set during the coronavirus pandemic that will feature actors filming themselves at home.

KEY FACTS

Not many details about the show have been released, like a cast list, plot points or a release date, though production is set to start over the next few weeks.

The series will be a short form anthology that explores life under lockdown, shot found-footage style, sources told The Hollywood Reporter.

Production will take place virtually, Kohan said, with writing, directing, and filming to happen at home.

Producers will send what is described as a “Blue Apron of production” box to quarantined actors to use to shoot their own scenes with, sources said.

Kohan will be joined by a team of Orange Is the New Black alumni, including Hilary Weisman Graham as showrunner and Diego Velasco as director.

CRUCIAL QUOTE

“Our job as storytellers is to reflect reality, and in this new, bizarre, bewildering reality we are all experiencing, we feel passionate about finding connection as we all remain at a distance,” Kohan and other creators said in a statement. “We’ve been inspired to create an anthology series that tells stories about the current moment we are living through—the unique, personal, deeply human stories that illustrate how we are living apart, together.”

KEY BACKGROUND

Social Distancing will be the latest addition to television filmed from home, joining Saturday Night Live and late-night talk shows including Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show, Stephen Colbert’s Late Show and Trevor Noah’s Daily Show. This week, the cast of old NBC hit Parks and Recreation will reunite from home for a scripted coronavirus-themed special.
