VERNON SCOTT, S, TCU

ROUND 7, PICK NO. 236

THE SKINNY

Scott didn’t become a starter until his senior season when he played both cornerback and special teams.

Scott was third on the team with seven passes defensed and had 44 tackles. He produced four turnovers in three games last season, including a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown against Oklahoma.

Scott was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, then TCU’s pro day was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

PACKERS’ PREDICAMENT

The Packers have gifted starters and solid depth at the safety position.

Green Bay gave Adrian Amos a four-year, $37 million deal in free agency in 2019 and used a first-round draft pick on Darnell Savage. That duo helped take a position that was a complete liability in 2018 and make it a strength in 2019.

Green Bay’s depth is solid, too, with veterans Raven Greene and Will Redmond returning. That means Scott will have his work cut out to make the roster.

THEY SAID IT

Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst on Scott: “We really like his versatility. He’s got a little bit of that ability to play safety but he can cover in the slot a little bit. He’s a little of a late bloomer, some struggles to get through the early part of his college career but once he took off this year, we just really liked his upside.”

Scott on his strengths: My game is, I’m a very rangy guy. I’m a very versatile guy. I think being able to show my athleticism on the defense in many ways throughout the Packers defense. I’m a versatile guy. I can play deep, I can come down and guard tight ends, running backs, come off the edge. I did all of that at TCU, so I feel like I’m a very versatile player. I can be used many ways in the Packers defense.”
