Pro-Trump Store Display Prompts More Calls To Boycott Hobby Lobby

TOPLINE

A photo of a pro-Trump display at Hobby Lobby shared on Twitter on Sunday evening, led to calls to boycott the controversial craft store, which has weathered past attempts to get consumers to spend their money elsewhere.

KEY FACTS

The photo of a display at the store that spelled out “USA Vote Trump” in giant letters was reportedly originally shared in a Facebook group for the Lincoln Project, a political action committee formed in 2019 by current and former Republicans who oppose the reelection of President Trump and his supporters in the Senate.

The tweet, which has been retweeted more than 11,000 times, made Hobby Lobby a trending topic Monday.

It’s unclear if the display was made by an employee or a customer; Hobby Lobby did not immediately respond to Forbes request to comment.

Green wrote a 2016 USA Today op-ed about his support for Trump’s presidential run and his belief that Trump was “our only hope for a Supreme Court that will protect freedom of religion.”

further Background

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby in 2014 in a 5-4 decision that found that requiring family-owned corporations to pay for insurance coverage for contraception under the Affordable Care Act violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993.

surprising fact

Green opened his first crafts shop in 1970 with a $600 loan and his family now has a $7.6 billion net worth, by Forbes’ estimates. Green and his family spent $500 million on the Museum of the Bible, which opened in D.C. in 2017.

tangent

Calls to boycott Goya Foods erupted online last month after the CEO of the Hispanic-owned company praised Trump during an event at the White House. CEO Robert Unanu said we are “truly blessed” that Trump is president. Both Trump and his daughter and advisor Ivanka shared their support of Goya Foods on social media, a move that was seen as a possible ethics violation.
